[Historical] 471st Anniversary of Pinkie Cleugh

On this day in History, in 1547, in Britain, the last full scale military confrontation between England and Scotland took place, which resulted in a catastrophic Scottish defeat - Battle of Pinkie Cleugh.

The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, fought on this day, 471 years ago was part of a conflict between England and Scotland known as the Rough Wooing, fought to prevent Scotland from being used by France to invade England and force Scotland instead to a royal marriage between Queen Mary of the Scots and the heir of the English throne, Edward (VI), son of Henry VIII.

It was the last pitched battle between Scottish and English armies and the first modern battle to ever be fought in the British Isles.

Resulting in a catastrophic Scottish defeat, the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh became known as Black Saturday in Scotland.
