Guys, i will be quitting map making for the time being as I don't see the point of wasting my time making sophisticated and balanced maps, the current community just doesn't have the desire to try them out unless it involves easy SP. As the result, I am suspending all of my projects and hiding them for a undetermined amount of time. Usually its a sign of good faith to allow another map maker to take over as a collaborator, but this can't be the case with my maps since all of the cartographers that i know are inactive Including Pyrruhs and Aetius. Another option to keep my current maps alive would be to allow cloning, but this is out of the question since people just don't have neither the time or skill to maintain my maps and I don't want anyone to steal my credit (I don't want to be another illuminatum).

The dead of map making could be attributed but is not limited to the following reasons:
1) dependency on cartographer clans
2) monopolization and stagnation of the map catalog
3) bastardization of the custom map ideal, custom map's market being overrun by people who only care about SP and easy wins (RP)
4) Noobification of the player-base, unable to learn basic Afterwind mechanics such as strategies, micro, macro, turn-blocking and proper economy management.
5) Unreliable Map-making engine (Sorry amok)
6) Mistrust and lack of understanding between the staff/mods and the map making community.

Now, many of you guys already knew that I and a few other map makers were on the verge of being inactive, but I feel like its common courtesy to let you guys know that as of know there is not a single one left. Now, this doesn't mean that you won't see us once in a while in lobby or roaming the forum, it just means that for the time being we aren't making any more maps and this is unlikely to change any time soon.

Thanks for playing my maps while the scenario genre lasted, hopefully new map makers arise form this vacuum and revive map making and scenarios again, but that is unlikely if nothing is done to fix the problems listed above.

Sincerely, Tunder.

I'll be here to make maps, and I'm not the only one from my side that is going to do it. The problem with people is that they relied too much on some of the names you mentioned, and without them, they lose their course (Hi WW1fags). Don't you worry, you will not go down this path, but I'm sure as hell that I will.

Cheers,
Al Fappino

I agree with Fappino here. In some ways there are small silver linings in the delay on the release of the editor. With these long standing names becoming frustrated and quitting, new map makers with ambition and a genuine interest in the well being of the community, rather than a overwhelming air of narcissism can begin to become recognized. Tunder understands this concept quite well based on his prior study into Map Stagnation. Personally, I believe that this proverbial turning over of the soil could yeild an exciting future for custom map creation on Atwar. Rather than remaining idle and complaining, I plan to create more quality maps because I sincerely believe that the vitality of the Atwar community relies on the work of Map Makers, and to enjoy the game I, and others with the same feeling will continue our work

I will say that I am frustrated with the lack of map editor progress. And I agree with some of the points presented here.

But.. I wont quit mapmaking because of it.

I'm still waiting on those up and comming map makers you all talk about frequently. The community is spoiled at this point, unless you can make maps at the same level of quality as aetius, tik tok, or phyruss, then your not taking any narcissists spot for a long time. Why do you think they play ww1 constently? It's a beautiful map, with solid gameplay that holds your hand, with unique mechanics. Just because you identify as a map maker and make the 50th version of something does not mean your gonna take out someone's legacy. I don't even personally count myself so don't attack me. My ggg is a copy, it might be a heavily edited copy but it was tunder3 design, and I'm ashamed of it. All the maps I truely hold close to my heart are not popular, my ggg snh, game of thrones, medieval warfare. So no I don't got a fucking ego, I sucked, I sucked bad, and thats why I want a new editor so fucking bad, I learned alot and my skills are improving and I'm ready to make some quality shit, and just when i truely felt like i was starting to hone my skills, html5 killed the editor and I could no longer make content. So no this from my end is not about feeding my ego, it's about redemption.

I am writing a book It's loosely based on personal experiances based in a fictional universe. I'll make a post about it in offtopic when I'm a little closer to completion.

Edit: I also have a neat forum game lined up, where I'll be making up a episodic story in forum weekly.

There's got to be at least a chapter where you mention directly or indirectly your love adventures with the map editor... it would make for a best seller!

Of course, let's mention the 2 autistic map makers that had no relevancy whatsoever till they took over the power vacuum tunder and I left - with the most autistic map ever. Seriously, ww1 is worse than RP. Yes RP is a shit hole, but at least you don't sit and sp-farm stacking. Ofcourse, because their good sp farm mapmakers aren't they. And sp farm = quality maps now does it? In that case let's praise Nifty and Fappino and Martell and Tempted and Magic, and all these other fuckers. Hail sp farm. Hail medal farm. Heil stacking autism.

Well if you think Aetius and Pyrrhus are good then you won't be making quality maps for some time. I look forward to seeing the next Endsieg level Sp-farm.

I, for one, enjoy thoughtful maps, balanced, interesting array of units, unique geographies, navigable rivers, etc. I play almost exclusively casual games, so I might have a little different perspective. Never touched the RP games...don't really know what they are about.

The World of Eben maps are a lot of fun and fairly well-balanced, I think. I've made scenarios, with no events, that just establish team play with balanced initial locations (I tried, anyway). I've played a lot on Foundation's Edge (a tour de force), Destoria (very funny) and Dreamworld (just plain cool). I would like to play Strangereal again and...damn, what is the name...it'll come to me, eventually...

The GoT maps are richly creative and detailed, to varying degrees. I like them all, particularly jammyme's Houses of Westeros, where I've set up some team play scenarios as well as a few actual scenarios with events. Those are works in progress, which will stay that way until the new editor comes online. The are available now, so feel free to try them out sometime.

I'm an NC junky, and all those coastlines and navigable rivers are remarkably effective (if tedious - best for casual games). I've had a lot of fun playing Adog's GGG maps for the same reason. It's pretty much the only strat I use for Eben, as well, though MoS can be effective, particularly Eben III, the modern world.

I've also enjoyed several of ezzatam's scaled mega-[country] maps. Some are better balanced than others, but there's no accounting for geopolitical irregularities - can't blame the creator for that.

Basically, this is a vote of confidence post - thanks for all your hard work and creativity! And thanks to those who let some of their creations open for dabblers like me to play around with the scenario features. Not a criticism to those that do not - it's your creation, do with it as you please.

Although I'm not really linked with the MapMaker side of the game, seeing that the 2015 competitive MapMaker contest failed with almost zero support (and the one in this year will probably fail as well) is quite worrying.
