As many know now, at rank 10 you reach a point where there are no more upgrades. Now, I don't want to be overpowered but I would like to keep having the ability to feel like I'm achieving something

so here's my idea:

  • We flood AW with tons of new upgrades, they shouldn't take a long time to make since it's just adding a number to generic unit (and if we need ideas THERE ARE TONS of threads suggesting new upgrades)
  • we limit the number of upgrades you can have active at a time
  • we let people save certain set ups, for easy switching depending on what strat you want to use

I think it's an okay solution to this problem, and will in no way make the high ranks overpowered compared to low ranks, and depending on how expensive the upgrades get, the later ones give a better bonus than the earlier less expensive upgrades to reward the loyal high ranks who deserve them (since low ranks would take a while to get these)

post your thoughts on the idea, this is a very basic idea so feel free to add your input to it.

also to add onto this idea, for holidays or special events you can make upgrades which are given to the players who log in on those days as a reward/gift (It would be a bad idea to do this in current state of upgrades since it would always be active :p)

My input goes something like this:

Don't allow you to have multiple effects for certain groupings active at the same time.

For example, say there end up to be a ton of upgrades which help all units. We can't let someone set all their upgrades to this, as their army would be easily overpowering against their enemy. Or in another case, someone may buy like ten upgrades for the same unit, and the next thing you know there's 12 attack 12 defense bombers for 60 cost flooding the map.

So I propose that there's a max of so many upgrades for the "all" category, two or three per unit type, and that certain things be incompatible (For example, no combining an attack boost for bombers with SM or we'd all be dead men)

I think letting people stack upgrades like that will make the game even more in-depth, for example, every unit has a negative vs another unit. If someone goes full bombers, you just pull out the anti-airs(pls make these non-premium) and suddenly they are dead for making such a flaw in their picks. I think it would bring a lot more strategy to AW which has been lacking since the removal of TB.

EDIT: Tanks and subs don't really have a unit that beats it, but inf is cheaper and can usually beat tank def, also tanks are already lacking in def anyways so it needs no counter rly)

as for subs, maybe add stealth as a +1 vs it? dunno.

True, but look at bombers and AA now, even without ridiculous bomber buffs. Nobody ever, ever invests in AA now, simply because bombers actually tend to be superior to them through their ridiculous range while AA simply can't function as a moving unit. As well as the fact that though the helicopter is supposed to counter infantry, a PD infantry in a city is equal to a helicopter, though the helicopter costs 3.2 (ish) times more.

While this is a side matter, it should be worth noting that a lot of the time units simply can't be effectively countered. If you were going to go down this route, you would not only need to come up with an effective countering system, unlike the current, but there would need to be more counter units for units that have none.

I think we're viewing an entirely separate issue right now than the original topic, honestly.

I use AA every time someone spams bombers at me, it works just fine. The only reason they win sometimes is due to HP, but this is just the random luck factor of AW. PD is specialized in defense, believe me if they attack helicopters or any unit really they take major losses like imp, but it is cheap units so you don't see it that much (P.S DS really does destroy PD infantry badly)

due to this I will disregard the later part of what you said, because I think it works well as is. I do agree this is an entirely different subject, however

How about just getting to put your name in pretty lights?

I mean, really. Do you play the game for the joy of playing or for getting points to open new units?

As it is, the noob needs to spend 3+ months playing to get to a point where he (she) has access to enough special units to balance out the crap a lifer can build.

If the continues to allow more stuff to be purchased with points a time will be reached when the noob will never have a realistic chance of acquiring enough points to play on a level field against the level 400 "been playing since I was six" lifer dude.

That is bad for the game because it will be the end of new people joining the game. As long as there is some dude with a level 400 account that has nuclear missile equipped submergable stealth helicopter transports, the noobs will stop playing.

Would you join a game where you have no hope of becoming top ranked simply because you learned about the game too late?

Interesting idea Fruit. It could be an option but in my opinion I still think they should just add new upgrades. High ranks being overpowered by upgrades is silly. High ranks are overpowered because of skill and experience not upgrades. Upgrades have a slight effect that is all. They should just add new upgrades to give motivation to the top players who've been loyal to afterwind for longer than anyone else. It's only fair. Play more, obtain more. Also it's quite rare to see high ranks playing with lower ranks since most of us play team games and such. In the case of world games it's often the lower and mediocre ranks allying against the high ranks so upgrades help us in those situations.

you seem to be speaking only for yourself, you must not have seen zizou, masterful, martinus etc. play when you say "High ranks being overpowered by upgrades is silly. High ranks are overpowered because of skill and experience not upgrades."

also I play on low rank accounts a lot, I can say with 100% accuracy upgrades make a HUGE difference, you may not need that many but just starting out with a rank 0 is not very good at all, skill or not(specifically the range and capacity upgrades, once you get them you can never go back).

P.S most people wouldn't fear a number if they didn't associate it with benefits, they all know being rank 9+ gives tons of upgrades.

well ofc the base upgrades are vital, which is really only the transportation capacity. Other than those ones the other upgrades only give slight augmentations to players.

And that's exactly how it should stay, in my view. With base upgrades being limited in number, and the slight augmentations not being limitless.

For example, say someone who happens to be rank 12 *Cough* could buy a ton of different upgrades for the same unit because they have just that much to spare. And, with only a limit on the number of upgrades rather than on the usage of said upgrades, they all of a sudden could play SM with bombers that gain an additional, say, +1 to HP, Defense, Range, Attack, and ARB. Because it would be ridiculous to not allow 5 side upgrades, but it would be just as ridiculous, if not more, to allow them to stack and affect single units. It would simply make playing to counter them nearly impossible, because nobody in their right mind would stack a bunch of upgrades on AA guns.

So, as to my prior proposal, I re-propose this with a bit more of viewable insight on the idea, hopefully making it more credible:

Also, I propose, as said above, that there also be a small number of upgrades available per a unit type (bombers, inf, militia), and if your strategy affects your units capabilities then it should count as one of these upgrades. However, as strategies are only available one at a time, strategies will obviously play a larger role than typical upgrades and be worthwhile still.

Look.

I have been playing war games for the past 35+ years. In the world of AW I am considered a "noob".

This means that I get to spend hours playing with no stealth units, no transportation upgrades, no strategy upgrades, etc.

I am still currently playing my very first game. It is a casual game. Since I started it with ZERO points, I have NO upgrades. I'm playing against folks with a variety of stealth, mobility and strategy upgrades. So far, despite that, I am doing OK.

The second game I played, I joined a Main room quick game. The next lowest ranking player was level 4 while I was level zippo. I was doing OK until suddenly I was dealing with a massive attack of stealth planes, submarines, marines and god knows what else. Obviously the level 7 player in the game decided to "teach me a lesson".

You want to keep this community alive, you need to make it possible to play the game with out hours of time spent gaining points so the new player has the simpliest of countermeasure units.

I get that the "old failthful" who have been here for eons want to get rewarded for their loyalty to the game. I'm just saying that if the playing field gets badly unbalanced by the "reward", it will only be the "old faithful" who will be willing to play this game.

Grand Chess Masters still get the same number of pieces, with the same number and kind of moves as beginning players. Why does this game need to be different than that?

This is by far the most hilarious thing I've ever seen in the forums, and it's no less true.

I disagree that high ranks are skilled because of experience and for obvious reasons. Upgrades matter in this game a lot. This is a very good solution, adds variety to the game, makes it more interesting because it would not be a linear escalation in upgrades anymore.
